Efficient Biomass Handling at Shell Low Carbon Solutions Biogas

At the biogas plant in Korskro, large volumes of biomass are moved and distributed every single day. To keep operations stable and avoid unnecessary downtime, Shell Low Carbon Solutions Biogas has chosen a complete crane solution from DCB – developed specifically to meet the demands of modern biogas production.

Stable operation requires control of the material

The plant handles several types of biomass, including deep litter and solid manure. These materials vary in structure and weight, placing high demands on the handling process. If the material is not fed evenly into the system, it has a direct impact on overall performance.

Previously, parts of the work were carried out manually, which increased the risk of uneven feeding and potential bottlenecks. It was therefore essential to find a solution that could automate more of the process, ensure stable material input, and reduce the need for manual intervention.

A crane solution built for biogas

The solution consists of two specially developed overhead cranes from DCB. They are designed to operate in an environment with high loads and long operating hours, where the equipment must run reliably day after day. All movements are controlled via frequency converters, ensuring smooth and precise operation. Operators can adjust speed and movement as needed, allowing the handling process to follow the rhythm of production.

The solution includes:

  • Two overhead cranes
  • Two 4,000-liter grabs
  • 30 meters of crane runway
  • Power rail system
  • PLC control and radio control
  • Complete mechanical and electrical installation

A more predictable and efficient workday

With the new cranes, biomass handling has become both faster and more consistent. The large grab and high capacity make it possible to move significant amounts of material without delays, while precise control ensures an even feed into the process.

Automation also reduces manual tasks and lowers the risk of operational interruptions. This results in a more stable production flow and better utilization of the plant’s capacity.

Automation provides:

  • More consistent feeding
  • Less manual handling
  • Higher operational reliability
  • Improved capacity utilization

A solution for modern biogas production

The installation at Shell Low Carbon Solutions Biogas demonstrates how a well-designed crane solution can influence the performance of an entire plant. When material handling works smoothly, the rest of the process becomes more stable and predictable.

DCB’s solution is developed with a focus on reliability, capacity, and user friendliness – supporting efficient production every day.
